FAQ

What is Fabric?

Fabric is a work community that seeks and supports quietly awesome people.

Wait… what is a work community?

We believe that opting out of a corporate workplace shouldn't mean a life of dining table isolation or anonymous co-working. Instead, we believe that people can know, value, and support each other, whether they're working on the same thing or not.

To support our growing community we share a space in downtown San Francisco, with a range of workspaces, weekly group lunches, and evening events.

It’s an experiment. We’re trying out different elements as we go, but the aim is always to have independently-minded workers have a home base where they feel valued, supported, and effective in their work.

What is the process to join?

There are several ways to start to understand what we’re about: chat with a member, join a lunch, work from our space for a day, or check out our website. Once you decide you’d like to join, contact us directly or through the website.

To be intentional about how we grow our community, we welcome new members to Fabric on an invite basis. That involves a couple of lightweight interviews with current members, to see if there’s a fit on both sides. We aim to do this in an efficient, respectful way with all prospective members.

Who am I joining?

Fabric is an invite-only community that grows through its members. We do it this way so that we can foster a dynamic, supportive, and inspiring membership with a diverse set of backgrounds and interests.

When can I work at Fabric?

Like your home, you’ll have keys and can access the space 24h and 7d a week.

Where is Fabric?

We live at 77 McAllister St, San Francisco. That’s about 60 relatively large steps from Civic Center Bart station, near the corner of Market and 7th streets.

Can I host guests?

Your guests are welcome here.

While Fabric is not equipped for people to take back-to-back outside meetings every day, we encourage members to hold board meetings, occasional client meetings and one-on-ones in the space. For this we have one bookable conference room and nooks and crannies to support good conversations.

Do you have an inspiring friend in town for a few days? They’re also welcome to work from Fabric for a day or two. We only ask that you introduce your guest to other members on Slack so they can say hello in person, and take responsibility for them while they’re with us.

Are there events? Can I host one?

Yes and yes!

We want events to become an energetic part of Fabric, with many of them being driven by members. We’re still figuring out how best to support this, but for now ping us when you want to host something, and we'll make sure it works. Some ideas that might work: movie nights, discussion groups, group jogs, small group user testing, lessons in something you're awesome at, etc.

How does it work? What does it cost?

We have designed Fabric to have a wide range of work areas, and support the ebbs and flows of our members. Consequently, we have no dedicated desks. As a member, you’re welcome to use any open space at any time. There are standing desks and sitting desks, tables, bars, comfy couches, and quiet chairs, conversation areas, and standup-supporting corners. However you work, you’ll find a spot that suits.

We have two monthly membership levels.

Some other things to think about:

  • If you work for a company, you may be able to expense the cost. You won't be the only one.
  • If you want to be involved at a certain level, but it's financially prohibitive, please talk to us. We can try to make it work. Better to have you involved and working happily.
